For over 38 years, David has been practicing as an entertainment attorney specializing in music, motion picture, television and video production and distribution. He also focused on emerging growth and new technologies, new media and the digital distribution of music on the Internet for various corporate and entertainment clients. David is an expert in representing record producers, recording artists, record and publishing companies, major motion picture studios, and television, film and video production companies. His clients have included Slash, Van Halen, Stanley Clarke, Teddy Pendergrass, Columbia Pictures, The Walt Disney Company, Paramount Pictures and DirecTV, to name just a few. ​

David was the Senior Vice President of Paramount Pictures and headed their Music Business and Legal Affairs Department for almost four years where he supervised attorneys, paralegals and assistants in negotiating and documenting soundtrack album, artist, producer, license and music publishing agreements for motion picture productions at Paramount, MTV Films and Nickelodeon Films. David also held the position of General Manager/COO of DeepRockDrive, the first interactive, live online concert venue in the world, supervising the production of over 85 concerts on the Internet streamed to more than 70 countries around the world.

David has had the privilege of sitting on the Board of Governors for the L.A. Chapter of the Recording Academy for 10 years.  During that time frame, David was Secretary of the L.A. Chapter for 2 years, served as the Chair of the Advocacy Committee and the Co-Chair of the Jazz Committee with Dave Koz and has been a member of the Recording Academy for 36 years.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on granting instruments and other musician services to various music education non-profit organizations, recently announced the appointment of David as Chairman of the Board for the Foundation. The announcement was made by the Foundation’s Board of Directors and reflects the organization’s goal of growing its charitable initiatives.

David also served on the Board of Governors for the Society of Singers founded by Ginny Mancini, and also served as the Vice President of Development for the Charity.  This organization held The Ella Award every year and its past honorees have included Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Julie Andrews, Brian Wilson, Celine Dion, Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, Andy Williams, and Herb Alpert and Lani Hall, among many others. One year, Smokey Robinson was honored with a special merit award presented to Aretha Franklin, and Helfant sat on the Dinner Committee for the Event with Elton John and David Foster acting as Honorary Co-Chairs. 

David is also a Board member of the Biederman Entertainment and Media Law Institute of Southwestern University School of Law, The Southwestern Alumni Board and Children's Hospital LA Inaugural Sports & Entertainment Leadership Council, and was on the Fender Music Foundation where he acted as the Secretary for the non-profit organization.  David previously served on the Board of Governors for the Beverly Hills Bar Association and sat as the Co-Chair of the Entertainment Section for two years.  In fact, David received the prestigious 2006 Board of Governor’s Award from the Beverly Hills Bar Association for distinguished and exemplary service to the Bar.

David also packaged and sold several music-driven TV specials to PBS, including “Rock Prophecies”, the award winning documentary on the life and career of Robert Knight, the famous rock photographer whose work has including the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Slash, ZZ Top, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

David was the Senior Vice President of Business Affairs and Head of A&R for Immergent Records, a cutting-edge multi-media entertainment and record company.  In that capacity, he was responsible for signing and acting as Executive Producer for:

  • Jo De La Rosa’s debut CD entitled “Unscripted”, the star of “The Real Housewives Of Orange County” and “Date My Ex” on the Bravo Network.
  • Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band CD entitled “Act Your Age” featuring performances from Patti Austin, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, Chick Corea and Art Tatum, which was nominated for 3 Grammy Awards (in the categories of Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, Best Instrumental Albumand Best Instrumental Arrangement).
  • The last Les Paul CD entitled “Les Paul & Friends – Children Of The Future” featuring performances from Slash, Richie Sambora, Joan Osborne, Joe Bonamassa, Edgar and Johnny Winter, Peter Frampton, Mick Hucknall, Joe Perry and others.
  • Steve Postell’s new CD entitled “Time Still Knocking” featuring appearances from David Crosby, Jennifer Warnes, Dave Koz, Benmont Tench, Steve Ferrone, Paul Barrere, Eric Johnson, John Oates, Buzzy Feiten, Robin Ford and many others.
